Who are the Harlingen Lions?

Lions International is the largest service organization in the world. Lion's Club of Harlingen was Chartered  on August 15, 1927, in the midst of the depression to help children and better the quality of life in Harlingen, Texas.

Currently, Lions Club of Harlingen has 35 members. Lions Club of Harlingen have always been leaders in the civic service in this community.  The main focus of  Lions Club of Harlingen is service to the youth of Harlingen.

What are Our Events for the Year?

Every week Lion members meet for a luncheon and program at Sauza's Restaurant located on Ed Carey Drive, Suite 4. The cost of the buffet meal is $8.00. Our major fund raising event is our raffle sales in November, December and January.  In addition, we sponsor blood drives, pay for eye exams and glasses, Sight Night for the Blind, Care & Share, White Cane Day, and sponsor a picnic for children who participate as Safety Patrol Officers in the Harlingen schools.

Where Does our Money go?

The majority of our money goes to support the Lions Camp in Kerrville which serves over a thousand handicapped and diabetic children each summer.  Locally, our dollars go to a variety of needs, with a special focus on Sight Conservation and youth activities.  Particularly providing glasses and eye exams for those who cannot afford it is a priority of our club.  This means that doctors and local organizations will contact the Lions Club when they become aware of a person who cannot afford to pay for eyeglasses and eye exams.  Though we do collect used eyeglasses through the year, we unfortunately cannot distribute them in the United States due to federal laws. These eyeglasses are recycled and are sent throughout the world to help those who need them. Lions also support the Texas Lions Eye Bank which serves visually handicapped persons throughout the state.

How are Decisions Made?

Lions Club of Harlingen  is organized under guidelines from Lions International.  We have a board of directors and elect officers on a yearly basis.   The board of directors meets monthly on the second Wednesday of the month at Bahnman Realty located on 503 E. Harrison St.  At these meetings board members make decisions on club business.

Why be a Harlingen Lion?

To support the community and give the gift of service to others while making friends and enjoying our time together.  Once you have seen the light in the eyes of a youngster who has returned from their first Lions camp, you will truly understand what being a member of  Lions Club of Harlingen is all about.  Members who become involved and participate, develop lifetime friendships and the satisfaction that only comes from helping others.

How can you become a member of  Lions Club of Harlingen?
